Are backlinks really worth fighting for?

Submitted by gazza on Wed, 07/05/2014 - 20:23

I recent years I have, and still do, have the pleasure in working for some great clients who understand the importance of a structured and well planned out SEO campaign. Historically it is well known that links to a website will enhance a websites search engine presence and by its very nature that website would enjoy large numbers of visitors.

Looking beyond the face value of a website

There is so much more to a website than meets the eye. In the quest to get noticed on line, are you looking solely at appearance only? Scratch deeper than the surface on a well performing website and you will find a whole myriad of inner workings that look and appear to be nothing more than a jumble of boring code.

However it is this boring jumble that is hiding the treasures of your future on line success. So forget the flash and perfecting the toning of those images, it is time to get down to the nitty gritty and analyse what is going on back stage.

Over the last few weeks, due to Google's updated algorithms, I have had an increase in emails from agencies offering guest posts and text link proposals. These types of emails are now not just becoming annoying but the way they are initially worded appears to be legitimate interest in my websites and indeed offering money for advertising.

This of course is not new to me nor to anybody else with a website with regular traffic. But due to the way these emails are being worded and many coming from the UK appearing to be legitimate companies, I feel obliged to reply.

How do I check my web sites google ranking?

This is a question I received today on a closed Facebook group and due to this being the type of question I get asked for quite a bit I felt I would adapt my answer slightly to fit nicely into a blog post. I needed to spend a little time thinking about how to answer this question because to be asked this question in the first place shows some lack of understanding. To answer this question first you need to understand a little more about how websites are ranked in the first place. Firstly, Google have over 200 factors that their algorithms take into account when ranking a website.

After surviving the Google Penguin update, do you know what should now be the focus of your SEO campaign? Before this question can be answered, it is important to know what the meaning of the Penguin update was. In a nutshell, the Penguin update addressed anything to do with web spam. The recent Penguin update caused many SEO experts to sit up straight and begin to fear the worst as the most recent Penguin update actually changed the algorithm rather than refreshing it.

Just a quick post to store some Drupal module research, when I get the time I would like to try out and test the following Drupal modules:

Word Link
The Word Link module allows you to automatically convert specific words into links. It works with the fields of your content types. This can be useful for crossposting your site's pages, or for the contextual advertising of your partners (SEO) - http://drupal.org/project/word_link
